FREE HOSPICE TRAINING IN NEW HARTFORD

NEW HARTFORD, AUGUST 22, 2011—Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. will offer a free volunteer training class this fall, Thursdays, October 6-November 3, 6:15-9:15 p.m., at Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. in New Hartford.  Pre-registration and interview are required by Thursday, September 29, 2011.

Kate Doran, Volunteer Services Supervisor at Hospice, said, "If you look around the table at a Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. volunteer training session, you'll see people from all walks of life.  Ask them why they volunteer and you'll get a variety of reasons or circumstances that bring them to volunteer training.  The one common thread you'll find in all of their stories is that they want to help others."

Volunteer training educates new volunteers about Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. and the role they will play as part of the Hospice & Palliative Care team.  A recent Hospice training graduate said, "Hospice training was far beyond what I expected; the leadership and knowledge of all involved was exceptional.  I learned so much about this program that will be beneficial to me to be a good volunteer, but I also received much for my personal growth."Volunteers may spend few hours a week in the patients' homes providing companionship to the patient or respite (a needed break) for the caregiver.  Often volunteers help with light housekeeping, fix a small meal, or run errands—anything that helps patients remain in their homes.  Volunteers also assist at the Hospice Office, The Siegenthaler Center,  or in the Hospice Bereavement Program.  Volunteers choose assignments that best suit their time, skills and interests at comfortable distances from their homes in Oneida, Herkimer and Madison counties.

For more information, please call Kate Doran, Volunteer/Bereavement Services Supervisor, today at 735-6484 or 1-800-317-5661, or visit  www.hospicecareinc.org and click on "Volunteers".

For teenagers ages 13-18 years old whose loved one has died.

For any adult who has experienced the death of a parent.  The loss of a parent is the most common form of bereavement in our country.  Because of this, adult children often feel a sense of isolation and may sense an unspoken message that adult parental loss is less significant than other losses.  No matter what the age of our parent or where or how the death occurred, the grief felt by an adult child can be intense and overwhelm-ing. This group is a safe place to share feelings and experiences, ask questions, seek comfort or just listen.  It is a place to receive and give support.  Led by Hospice Volunteers Paul Butnoris and Fil Salsbury.

Starts Wednesday, September 14, 2011, and meets for six (6) Wednesdays in a row.

6:30-8:00 p.m.
Pre-registration requested, but not required.

PET LOSS GRIEF SUPPORT – A FOUR-SESSION ADULT ONLY GROUP

This very special bereavement group is for adults who are grieving the loss of a pet.  When a much-loved pet dies, we often find ourselves in a position of hidden grieving.  We may feel isolated and unsure of how much of our feelings we can share with family, friends or co-workers.  We may sense the unspoken message that our grief is not important or worse, inappropriate.  We miss not only the companionship of our pet, but the unconditional love they gave to us.  The group will provide us with education surrounding the grieving process, allow us the opportunity to share our experiences and feelings, ask questions, seek comfort or just listen.  It is a safe place to both give and receive support.  Facilitated by Lisa Wolfe, LMSW.

Starts Tuesday, September 20, 2011, and meets for four (4) Tuesdays in a row.

6:30-8:00 p.m.
Pre-registration required.

HELPING CHILDREN COPE WITH PET LOSS—A ONE-SESSION WORKSHOP FOR ADULTS

This workshop for adults only is designed to provide education surrounding the needs of children who have experienced the loss of a pet.  No matter what type of pet, or how long the pet was part of the child's life, the loss may be significant to the child.  When a pet dies, children, toddlers through teens, react in different ways.  As a parent, it is hard to know just what to say or do.

We will discuss what normal grief reactions may look like, as well as symptoms that may cause us more concern.  This loss may present parents with a unique teachable moment that will set the stage for a child's ability to cope with other losses they will experience throughout their life.  Strategies to help our children cope with the grief surrounding the loss of their pet will be explored and suggestions given.  Presented by Lisa Wolfe, LMSW.
